Out of great tragedy lessons to be learned and love to continue, life goes on . It is difficult to keep going, keep the movement of the brush on the canvas. Our family lost a beloved member, my only niece, who had just turned 18 years old. This is the first painting I have created since that great loss a couple weeks ago. I have to take this tragedy and become inspired to do better with each artistic creation. This painting came totally out of my head, starting out as an island with basic water for a class I was teaching at my sister's school for K-6th grade basic techniques. The canvas had barely been touched. Just enough to inspire the kids to create their own work. I took the partially completed canvas home and there is sat for several weeks with a stack of other canvas. When my niece past, I decided to finish the canvas and it totally took on a different design. The little red fish that was painting on the original , swimming under the surface, became a boat anchored just off the beach of an island lagoon. There is no one in the boat which leaves the impression to the viewer that the person who was in the boat swam ashore. Perhaps my niece helped me paint this piece, knowing that she has moved on to a different beautiful shore. Tragedy inspires us to do better. Hopefully you will see this in new paintings to come...

John, I'm so glad that you have picked up the brush again. You all have been through so much in the last few weeks and this beautiful painting will be a symbol of the fact that life is a gift to each of us, and it is up to us to use it up while it is in our hands. We don't know whether our time will be long or short but we do know that each of our lives ripples into all the others. You are touching many with your works, your words and your inherent kindness and generosity. Bringing good out of tragedy, joy out of sorrow, is the work that we are all called upon to continue. Go forward,my friend, with the knowledge that each of you are in our hearts and on our minds every single day - more than you can know. Love and hugs.
