Hello all. Checking back in after a bit of a side track with my Dad in and out of hospital(doing better) , then myself catching what he had while cleaning his house before he was to come back home. This is the Tyson version of the Sea Nettle (Jelly fish) . I wanted to make this painting have an artsy edge with some bright colors against a black background. The canvas size is 24" x 30" high and I have this peace for sale. See my website at www.tysonart.net (second page). Sea nettles can grow upwards of 3' in diameter and with the total length of their stinging tentacles 12 to 15 feet . They are common along the California and Oregon coast. If you are stung by one, it will feel like a bee or wasp sting . These are totally different than the Portuguese Man of War in regards to potency. If you want a safer look at these unusual creatures, go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. My stay at Rivas Fish House on the Wharf in Santa Cruz was a advertising success with great exposure being able to show off 40 paintings for 8 weeks. Thanks again to my good friend Cindy for hooking me up with such a wonderful place to have my work shown off. Well I hope you enjoy checking out this painting. Next up... we shall see what my canvas and brushes have in mind.. John

Hi all.. Just finished another painting that created its self. I started out with a simple reef at the bottom of a shallow bay and then thought it would be nice to add some fish in. I wanted a statement fish and thought the blue Surgeon fish would be a good one. There are many species of Surgeon fish , mostly found in Hawaii, especially found while snorkeling in Hanauama Bay. Surgeon fish are called that because of their spine at the base of their tail that when startled can extend out shaped like a knife. They are mostly vegetarians and some of the species can get up to 25" long. I hope you like this one, being a larger painting 40" wide, it makes a nice statement piece. See more information , go to my site and see description of the painting and pricing.
This sunset was a labor of love for me, attempting to come up with some vibrant colors that I am actually now getting known for... this seascape could be most anywhere from the California coast to a more tropical beach environment. A seascape believe it or not , is one of the more difficult paintings to create. There is a very fluid technique that the artist has to deal with .. How would the water move ? Where would the light hit the water?Where is the light coming from, the sun , the moon...? How bright can the painting be ? When the wave falls onto a lower level , how does it crest and how large is the main wave in relationship to the rest of the painting. OMG.. just so much to deal with , its enough to stress an artist out. There is a thing called the anatomy of a wave that definitely helps when creating it but of course the light inside the wave is yet another element to think about. At the completion of the painting, you are either proud of it or irritated by it and if you don't like it you have to keep going until you feel its right. Well I hope you like it. It is a larger painting 40" wide by 30" high so there is a lot of canvas to cover. I now finally like the painting and figured when I could stand there and look out to sea and feel relaxed with a sense of serenity like my friend Cindy's comment about it after seeing it, I am ready to show it to all of you. Enjoy!! until next time...
Hello all fellow artists and fans of my work. I have been fine tuning old paintings and creating some new ones getting ready for a new showing of my art at Rivas Fish House on the wharf in Santa Cruz Ca beginning May 1st for 6 weeks. I am very excited to have my art on display and for sale at this location as it is right out on the ocean in a beautiful restaurant with full walls of glass viewing the light house and beaches of lovely West Cliff Dr from the water perspective. It will be the start of the tourist season there, a great time to be seen and better possibilities of sales. As a child we came over every other Sunday to the wharf to hang out with my family and have lunch there in Santa Cruz, which was my parents old stomping grounds(literally). They used to drive over in the 40's every weekend to dance to the big bands at the boardwalk. We have a family beach house at Pajaro Dunes near Moss Landing part of the Monterey Bay, that I go to as much as I can to lock into my mind, what the waves look like for painting inspirations. This new painting is of course completely out of my head but feels a bit more tropical than the area my paintings will be showing but there are several areas in Monterey and Carmel that do have similar waves and water color. Seascapes remind us of our travels, vacation with family and friends, and a ocean that we are all drawn to from all of our common beginnings. I love painting the going's on under the sea as well as whats on the surface , on land and beyond... anything natural environment wise. Just finished this new painting. I wanted to create a vibrant color, close up painting of a large butterfly fish(the Copperband butterfly fish) that would be artsy and fun. Copperband butterfly fish are found in Australia, Indonesia, Melanesia, Singapore and Solomon Islands . It loves coral reefs and tropical climates. One of the largest butterfly fish. It makes a beautiful pet in your home salt water tank but you need at least a 50 gallon tank to have it stay healthy.
Hello all. I have been working on and off on this painting for a couple of weeks. Anybody that tells you Zebra's are easy to paint is well...... I found them very difficult . I had a wonderful reference from several different photos taken by my dear friends who traveled to South Africa, in order to get a concept of the look . Zebras are located in 3 different areas(regions) but no region will interbreed with another. They are considered to be black with white stripes rather than white with black stripes. They can travel in a heard of a couple thousand but often are found in smaller family groups. They can not be trained like a horse but are highly intelligent . They are brave against predators. Usually only getting 4' to 5' tall at the shoulder. Interestingly no two Zebra's have the same identical stripe pattern. I hope you enjoy this painting newly added to my Safari collection on my website. Until next time . .... take care..... The painting I created was made of oil on wrapped canvas.
Hello all. Haven't blogged in a while so I thought I would check in with fans and friends. I have been busy trying to paint as many paintings as possible as I have several pieces that will be shown at the Big Bear Coffee house in Los Gatos, Ca on N. Santa Cruz Ave, for the month of March . I also was brought on board to a website in Laguna Beach for designers to go to purchase original art for their design projects both residential and commercial with me having the seascape/underwater category. Therefore, I have been trying to create lots of fresh new work. This piece was created as a reminder of a beach I went to in Hawaii that appeared to be deserted. So peaceful . I thought the painting might give folks a feeling of being on vacation or after a crazy day, a relaxing view to come home to. Hope you enjoy my peaceful wave.. Until next time
Hello all. As I have been invited to show and sell some of my work in the Monterey Bay area, I decided to create a few new pieces including some friendly sea lions and kelp as well as some other pieces going forward that have a typical look to our Northern California sea life that folks in this area can relate to. Our kelp forests are a uniquely balanced ecosystem with the right amount of mammals feeding on the urchins to keep the undersea forest from being over consumed. Our fishing needs to be controlled as well off shore to keep this system in balance. An excellent close up view of a kelp forest and it's inhabitants can be achieved by going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where there is a huge aquarium that contains a large kelp forest and many fish and other creatures. This will give you a chance to see what life goes on under the surface without having to become a certified diver to do so. I decided to add some sea lions into the mix for fun as well as some Garibaldi fish that are common to our Monterey bay (the orange ones towards the bottom of the painting). Hope you like this one... until next time Enjoy!!
Hello all. I just finished creating this tropical wave gently landing on a beach somewhere from my mind. As more folks are complaining about the cold and getting ready for the winter, I thought I would create this concept of warmth for them to view. If you have been to Hawaii or Tahiti , you know have wonderful the water is there and how nice it is to stroll along a quite deserted beach. No matter how chilly it gets in your life, a tropic beach warms your heart and soul and instantly takes away all your stress. Enjoy... until next time
